WordPress.com users now have the option to turn on falling snow on their blogs, after Matt Mullenweg asked for a falling snow script two days ago. Since it is only for WordPress.com users and not for self-hosted WordPress blogs, I whipped up a plugin that does the same. All you need to do is upload the plugin folder to your plugin directory and activate to see falling snow on your blog.
Wordpress.com users will have the snow until 2nd January but with this you can leave it on for as long as you like, though it does not make much sense to leave it on for too long.
Download at: WordPress Plugins Directory
Plugin version: 1.2
Required WordPress version: Should work with all.
License: Released under the terms of the GNU GPL: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt
To install, upload the folder “let-it-snow” with its contents to “wp-content/plugins/” and activate the plugin in your admin panel. That’s it!
The snowfall is configurable by editing snowstorm.js. More information at original DHTML Snowstorm page.
If it does not work for you. Check that your theme has the wp_head() function call in header.php. If it does not, add <? wp_head(); ?> just before the closing </head> tag.
If the snow is going under or covered by stuff on your page, you need to open up snowstorm.js and change this.o.style.zIndex = 2; at line 192 to something like this.o.style.zIndex = 999;. (Thanks to Torben)

This falling snow script used in this plugin is by Scott Schiller.
1.3 [27 December, 2007] Changed z-index of snow so it’s on top of everything.
1.2 [26 December, 2007]: snowCollect now working, thanks to Scott Schiller for his help.
1.1: Added additional style declarations for themes that style the img tag.
1.0 [25 December, 2007]: First version

This is awesome, Aen. Thanks for the work!
Right now I am using a falling snow javascript that shows up differently in IE and FF (more snowflakes in IE somehow). I’m gonna try out this WP plugin afterwards.
Merry Christmas to all at Widgeous!
It’s great! Now I get to see snow. Can only test it when I get home and install that plugin.
Daphne was having problems with her snow showing up with borders and paddings because her theme’s CSS is applying these properties to all IMG elements. So I edited the script and set all borders, margins and paddings to zero for theme compatibility.
If your theme screws up your snow, you’ll need version 1.1 of this plugin.
Merry Chritmas to you too Veron and everybody. I hope this plugin will spice up your blog a little!
You can use the same controls as the Schillmania script that’s there on their page. The two functions on their site are great if your readers dont always want the snow or want a bit of a play with it
The SnowCollect function doesnt seem to stop collecting, even on false, does this happen to anyone else?
[…] Thanks to this plugin there’s now REAL snow falling here! But do let Miss Loi know if this crashes your computer […]
Thanks Blayde. I’ll update the post with the links to config and cutomize.
I have contacted Scott Schiller regarding snowCollect not working. I hope he can help.

Scott got back to me. snowCollect set to false actually means snow will recycle after hitting the set maximum, then recycled. With his help, I changed it so works like what you and I thought it should be, that is if snowCollect = false, it should not pile up at all.
And I released version 1.2 with this change.
If you like this plugin, please help me digg it.
The plugin is now on the WordPress Plugins Directory.
Unfortunately, the zIndex of the flakes is set to “2″ by default. My theme’s CSS defines a lot of elements at a higher zIndex (including the space for the posts). This results in the flakes being visible only on some parts of the page…
If you have a similar problem, the only thing you need to do is change the value of the following line to something higher than “2″ (e.g. “999″):
this.o.style.zIndex = 999;Cheers,
Torben
Thank you Torben. That was really helpful.
Merry Christmas!
[…] I told you some wordpress developer will be creating a plugin for this. Let It Snow! Falling Snow WordPress Plugin for wordpress.org blogs which will continue to snow in any season without expiring. Like this […]
Hm, it still piles up, false and all…
It’s not that i mind, but the who CPU time might irk some people.
btw Dugg it, and nice to see it’s just 3 files
I was wondering how would people know that they have to come to your
http://blog.widgeo.us/wp-content/plugins/let-it-snow/image/snow/
directory to manually download the snows for the plugin to work.
The download archive from Wordpress.org do not have the images folder.
Blayde, if you look at the snow here, it’s not piling.
got here from cssmania, just checking out the site. Good work!
@ Brajeshwar: Your comments was caught by Akismet. Sorry about that, it’s my 1st time submitting a plugin to Extend and I had problems connecting to the SVN. I’ve committed the images, should be up soon.
Thanks dev!
Nice work! Thanks!!!
Hey it works now, w00t!
Great! And thanks PB!
Is there a version 1.3?
I was prompt by wordpress to down version 1.3 of falling snow plugin
It’s a z-index fix, if you have no problems with the snow goign under stuff you shouldn’t need it.
Wow the plugin has already been downloaded 227 times at WordPress plugins directory!
hi, very nice plugin, i will use this thank you so much!

Hey Blayde, it’s really a simple plugin actually. I probably made it at the right time for Christmas.
Thanks for dropping by often. Our developer team are putting together a pretty interesting article on IM and PHP so let’s see what they are cooking.

I wonder how many users played with the variables at the beginning of snowstorm.js. It wasn’t documented or commented a lot, but editing that file gives nice options of customization…
Thanks for the plugin…:) But it DOES make sense to leave it longer, some of us have Christmas in January and, well, people on the other side of the world definitely need a snow plugin in July

I’m using this plugin but would love to be able to alter it for other events. Maybe be able to use confetti or falling hearts as examples. With today being New Year’s Eve (or even for a Wedding or Birthday or Anniversary of my blog) confetti would be really helpful. Is this possible? I tried just changing the colors of the images but that didn’t work. I still only get the white images.
Hey CWF Game Cast, you can edit the snow images and replace them with others.
Aen, I tried that but they only show up as white images. I used photoshop to paint them a different color (red, violet, green, yellow, blue, and cyan) and saved the new files over the old (as .png and .gif). They show as the new colors in Photoshop but I still get the white images. Also, the none.gif graphic I wasn’t able to change colors on and not sure if I need to.
I managed to fix it. I tried saving another version of the plugin that had the confetti colors, uploading and activating that, so that I wouldn’t lose the snow images. I think that caused a problem. Instead I made a folder named confetti, complete with an imagereadme.txt reminder, and put it in let-it-snow/image. When I need confetti I’ll just transfer the confetti images to let-it-snow-image/snow. I have a backup of the snow images at let-it-snow/image/flakes. It is a little cumbersome but works for me. Perhaps you have a better solution/workaround?
The plugin uses 01–05.gif in the “image/snow/” folder. These are the images you can replace. If you have set
usePNG = true;in snowstorm.js then you have to replace the PNGs instead.A better way is to create folders for different images and save your confetti images (must be named 01–05.gif) in “image/confetti/” folder. You can have “image/stars/”, “image/hearts/”, etc. Then change the following in snowstorm.js to the image directory you want.
var imagePath = sitePath + 'image/snow/’; // relative path to snow imagesHope you get what I mean.
That actually does sound easier. I wasn’t sure if you had coded any back door paths that would require changing or if that was the only one.
Also, I know that Scott in his original DHTML version has, on his site, a function (via a link) to change the wind direction and also to stop the snow. Is this coded into the plugin? If not, will you please add it into the plugin? I think that is a really great option so that visitors can have some control of aesthetics and also to turn the plugin off (as it were) for themselves if they’re on slow connections or find it distracting.
The plugin is made with Scotts script with and is compatible with his change wind and stop snow functions. That is why I mentioned Scott’s site for customizations.
Is a separate installation (or insertion of script in our Main Index Page) necessary to get his change wing and stop snow functions working?
You can call the functions from a link like:
a href=”javascript:snowStorm.randomizeWind()”
a href=”javascript:snowStorm.stop()”
Change Wind
Stop Snowing

@ lauren. Could be the path of the images are wrong. make sure you placed them in the same place as the original images and they should be the same file names.

Aen, thanks for the plugin. We use it on a number of Wordpress MultiUser installs. We’ve run into problem with folks that have older browsers and have issues with javascripts and the like. Can you include an option for the profile page so that specific users can turn off the snow if it gives them trouble? I would guess an user option where if found and if marked, then don’t show the snow.
I note that wp.com has this option:
